It’s become tradition for Trinity Catholic High School to give away hot dogs to those in attendance at each season’s homecoming football game.

Well in Friday’s 54-34 win over Archdiocesan Athletic Association conference opponent St. Dominic, Trinity senior running back Marquise Hill provided the mustard.

Hill scored six times in a variety of ways in pacing Trinity to the win. He also added 397 all-purpose yards with 189 yards rushing, 80 yards receiving, 30 yards on kick-off returns and 80 yards on punt returns.
“I don’t know what to say,” Hill said. “Deep down inside those stats don’t mean anything to me. It’s just about the win. I could have no touchdowns, no yards, as long as we win.”

Hill scored four first half touchdowns as Trinity built the 34-14 advantage by intermission.

His early scores came on a 15-yard run to put the Titans up 7-0 in the first quarter after a Scott Breeden extra point, on a 60-yard run from scrimmage to put Trinity up 14-0 after Breeden’s second PAT, on a 70 yard punt return just under halfway through the second quarter and on a 80-yard touchdown reception from Trinity quarterback Terrance Watson with just over three minutes left before the half to give Trinity the 20-point advantage.

On the three biggest plays, Hill couldn’t help but credit his linemen and other underclassmen that helped make the plays possible.

“The first (long) run was supposed to be a 44-power and I saw the hole collapsing,” said Hill of the straight-on run that turned into a circus play that featured three cutbacks. “I was like ‘I’m gonna go this way’ and I saw the guy on the ground and figured he was going to get me. I went back the other way because Toma (Peebles) was calling for me and he just kept saying ‘bring it to me’ and I brought it.”

For good measure, Hill added scores of 18 yards in the third quarter and 1-yard in the final quarter to help seal the win.

But, like Hill, Trinity’s coach didn’t care so much about the numbers as long as his team got results.

“I’m not really a stat guy, I’m more of a coach that’s on the intensity end,” Trinity coach Leon Hite said. “Those do sound like some good numbers but that production because of the line – there’s a lot of freshmen on that line – and those guys l=played way bigger than (St. Dominic). They just believed they could push Dominic down the field and they did it.”

In addition to Hill’s big day, Trinity (2-3 overall and in the AAA) got a score on an 8-yard pass from Terrance Watson to Toma Peebles in the second quarter and a Watson 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.

St. Dominic (3-2, 2-2) got its points via an Andrew Steiniger 6-yard first quarter run and a Ben Logel 35-yard run in the second quarter.

With the 20-point deficit at intermission, Dominic’s coach found himself not worrying so much about a comeback as he was the scoreboard breaking down.

“I did the math and 34 times two is a lot of points,” St. Dominic coach Bob Leonard said. “I was just hoping Hill and Watson were going to get tired at some point. But seriously, that marquise is a special kid and we knew coming in that Trinity was a good football team. We watched film of their first games and just felt they’d lost because they didn’t have any good luck.”

It looked as if Trinity’s rotten luck might continue, however, as the Crusaders scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to 34-27 midway through the third quarter when a Sean Goggins 35-yard touchdown reception from Evan Merz was followed by a 6-yard scoring run by Steiniger the next Dominic drive.

But the Titans stuck it out and eased to the win.

“We worked all week on character, there was very little football,” Hite said. “We locked arms and came into this together and didn’t quit. This was all about the brotherhood and sticking together and that’s what we did there. We stuck together and we saw it through.”

Dominic’s Tyler Jenkins led the Crusaders with 26 carries for 149 yards.

Trinity will try and ease its way back to the .500 mark when it travels to DuBourg (3-2) Friday for a 7 p.m. game.
